Alternatives

Posted in Group:

When seeking help for my gambling problem (poker/online mostly) I get this overwhelming feeling that every support group is spiritual or religous in some sort and I am not. I do not believe in what a mojority of people refer to as "God" and I feel disgusted when I enter a church for an AA meeting. I get this feeling like I am weak and need a higher power to support me (or belief in one). When I myself want to feel strong and be my own higher power. Understand? Does anyone know any alternative for support in gambling addictions that is not closely related to a spiritual feeling or "god?"

Thanks

I think churches are used most often because to be quite honest they are empty most of the week-they are these great empty spaces that offer their building for super cheap or sometimes free, while it may make you uncomfortable there are financial reasons behind it. Gambler's Anonymous is a wonderful organization and it has zero religious affiliation,

Is Gamblers Anonymous a religious society?
No. Gamblers Anonymous is composed of people from many religious faiths along with agnostics and atheists. Since membership in Gamblers Anonymous requires no particular religious belief as a condition of membership, it cannot be described as a religious society. The Gamblers Anonymous recovery program is based on acceptance of certain spiritual values but the member is free to interpret these principles as he chooses.

I understand your concern, but if you want to be your own higher power than don't allow other's reliance on the God of their choosing hinder your path towards conquering this addiction.
